an EIT Manufacturing project

The challenges of supporting SMEs in adopting AM have a four-fold character:
(a) Materials & process knowledge is required,
(b) Software becomes critical (and expensive)
(c) Automation is a key and,
(d) Collaborations are required.

As such, ACloud holds the vision of offering an inexpensive tool based on a user-friendly platform that will be able to offer the opportunity to SMEs to optimize holistically their production.

The project aims to deliver significant impact, utilizing cloud-based implementations for holistic production optimization. What will be addressed is provision of secure storage of data in cloud, manufacturing optimization software taking into account cost, time and flexibility, streamlining communications between stakeholders of AM technology, and acceleration of product development by expediting collaboration and providing optimization capabilities. The cloud-based AM system will provide portability of data, options for automated decision making, collaboration opportunities and easy/agile manipulation of data. Knowledge extraction from many points (machines / SMEs) will be of crucial importance to the SME and it will help boost their production efficiency.

The PaaS architecture will help eliminate the need for extra software tools, leading to a unified service point.

Link to industry

Advanced manufacturing and Industry 4.0 include AM as a Key Enabling Technology. Allowing the portion of production that is based on AM to be more agile, qualitatively more advanced, less costly and more sustainable through introducing the corresponding KPIs in the production optimization, one makes manufacturing more competitive. SMEs with less resources in terms of optimization techniques and means will have access to shared corresponding services, while LEs will be forced to introduce similar KPIs once the market demands them, so that they remain competitive.

Learning Outcomes

1. Machine Optimization & Selection of printers for experimental work

2. AM Modelling

3. Plastics and Metals AM Test Beds

4. Servitization of Manufacturing (product service system integrated in machines)

5. ACloud Platform Development: Agile front end & Robust Back End Algorithms & Databases

All partners within the ACloud consortium are leading their regional manufacturing innovation ecosystems, addressing the needs of their local stakeholders. The diverse and multidisciplinary nature of the partnership provides the excellence and complementarity required to successfully address the current and emerging challenges of European manufacturing.

Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems & Automation

The Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems & Automation (LMS) is oriented on research and development in cutting edge scientific and technological fields. LMS is involved in a number of research projects funded by the CEU and European industrial partners. Particular emphasis is given to the co-operation with the European industry as well as with a number of "hi-tech" firms. LMS is under the direction and technical coordination of Professor George Chryssolouris. It is organized in three different groups:

1. Manufacturing Processes Modelling and Energy Efficiency
2. Robots, Automation and Virtual Reality in Manufacturing
3. Manufacturing Systems
